Raising wages & breaking ground on Medicaid expansion

The Fairness Project worked with Mainers for Health Care on a ballot initiative in 2017 to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, making it the first state in the nation to achieve the expansion through a ballot initiative. The measure brought health care to more than 70,000 Mainers.

The Fairness Project also worked with local partners on a ballot initiative to gradually increase the minimum wage from $7.50 in 2016 to $12 an hour in 2020 for 181,000 Mainers. After 2020, the law calls for annual adjustments to keep pace with the cost of living. The $12 minimum wage was voted into law on Nov. 8, 2016 by a margin of 56%-44%.
